BAXLEY, GA (WTOC) -
A SWAT team shot and killed a man authorities said held them at bay for hours outside his Appling County home.
According to Appling County sheriff Benny DeLoach, deputies went to Holland Road Extension just after 4 a.m. Sunday for a complaint of shots fired toward a house. DeLoach said deputies went to James M. Dixon's mobile home to confront him about the shooting.
The sheriff said Dixon refused to come out of his house and told deputies he was armed. When deputies could not convince Dixon to surrender, they called for a SWAT team. According to DeLoach, Dixon came out of his mobile home around 9 a.m., armed, and refused to drop the weapon. The sheriff said the SWAT team shot Dixon after several commands to drop the weapon.
According to the sheriff, Dixon had no criminal history and authorities are still trying to determine what prompted him to shoot at his neighbor's home.
DeLoach said the fatal shooting was under state investigation, standard procedure in officer-involved shooting.
