Blind active duty officer shares his story with students

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The U.S. Army's first and only blind active duty officer shared his amazing and inspiring story with students at Savannah Christian Friday. Cpt. Scotty Smiley lost his sight when a suicide car bomb exploded in Mosul, Iraq on April 6, 2005. He told the students he was really down at first but came to realize God had a purpose for him.

"I had a decision to make and in the end, that decision was to live a better life, live a happy life. God was always there with me, the friends, the unit just supported me and I knew that the values of the Army and everything that this country offers was so much better to fight for. So, I pushed on, I pushed forward and wake up early morning, how ever early it may be, to help defend our constitution. It is just an awesome opportunity to continue to serve," said Smiley.

Captain Smiley's story is told in his riveting book "Hope Unseen." He will be speaking at the Savannah Book Festival Saturday.
