BEAUFORT, SC (WTOC) -
Lowcountry Produce, a specialty food retailer, celebrated its grand opening on Thursday with a ribbon cutting event.
The 1917 City Hall building, which was originally built as a post office, is next to the county library in downtown Beaufort.
The building's latest renovation now highlights its original architectural features such as interior arches, high ceilings and windows, according to the news release. Under an agreement, Lowcountry Produce made and paid for the building's renovations.
All the store's products are handmade with only all-natural ingredients and hand-packed, according to a news release. The products are at the farmstand in Lobeco, which will remain open. It sells local fruits and vegetables. The new downtown store features cheeses, meats, desserts, canned goods, boutique cookies and ready-to-go meals.
Lowcountry Produce is led by Noel Garrett, his brother Dwight Garrett and Seabury Thorp. The retailer distributes specialty food products to more than 1,500 stores across the country. The Garrett's parents, Martha and Dwight Garrett, founded the company.
Lowcountry Produce, Redevelopment Commission and city leaders negotiated a lease for a 10-year period in increments of an initial three-year term with renewals available for three and four years, the news release said.
