EFFINGHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -
The cash reward is up to $8,100 as the Effingham County Sheriff's Office works to uncover a dog fighting ring.
The investigation began last week when deputies found a badly injured bait dog named Kekoa.
"Seeing what someone did to that dog gave me fuel...fuel to find the person who could do that to an animal," Corporal Derrick Seckinger with the Effingham County Sheriff's Office said.
Corporal Seckinger found Kekoa in rural Effingham County. He says the dog was barely clinging to life and had injuries all over his body.
"Immediately I knew it was a dog associated with dog figthing," Seckinger said.
Seckinger says Kekoa was used as a bait dog. He was tortured while dogs ripped him apart.
"It's a living creature. They use them so the fighting pit bulls can get practice," Seckinger said.
The Effingham County Sheriff's Office is determined to find whoever is running the dog fighting operation.
They may have to survey land from the sky because they believe the operation might be hidden on dense property.
"There is something going on somewhere. I think it's close to Effingham...either in the county or closeby. We've had too many episodes like this happening," Effingham County Sheriff Jimmy McDuffie said.
Kekoa is being fostered with a family through the Malachi Foundation.
