EFFINGHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

A trial continues Thursday in Effingham County for a man charged with killing his girlfriend's 2-year-old daughter.

Effingham County sheriff's deputies and paramedics said that when they arrived at the couple's house - the girl was lying on a bedroom floor unconscious and not breathing with a black eye and multiple head injuries.

They said Kevin Johnson had been watching the girl while her mother was at work. He told deputies that the toddler fell off a couch and hit her face. But deputies said that Johnson later changed his story claiming the toddler hit her head in the bathtub.

Johnson is pleading not guilty and faces murder and aggravated assault charges.

The trial is expected to wrap up on Friday.
