2 weekend checkpoints net several arrests

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Several agencies conducted two traffic checks over the weekend that resulted in several arrests and citations and warnings issued.

Savannah-Chatham Metro Police, Chatham County sheriff's deputies and Georgia State Patrol troopers worked together to implement the checks.

The two road safety checks took place at Ogeechee Road and Interstate 16/ 37th Street Connector and at Bona Bella and Skidaway Road for about two hours over the weekend.

SCMPD officers issued 24 citations and 19 warnings. Two people were arrested on charges of driving on suspended licenses. Two felony warrants were served; three arrests were made in connection with marijuana possession; and seven other misdemeanor arrests were made, according to police. A car stolen from Sylvania was recovered and and the driver was charged with traffic offenses during the road checkpoints.

Police were also able to identify and recover a vehicle involved in a hit-and-run. Three were arrested on felony drug charges; one was arrested for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

One driver was arrested on a parole violation warrant and several bags of marijuana packaged for distribution exceeding 60 grams and more than $19,000 cash from his car, according to an SCMPD news release. More marijuana, scales and an assault weapon were seized from the residence of another suspect who was stopped at the checkpoint, according to police.

State troopers issued 21 traffic citations, 27 traffic warnings, according to police. They also made 10 DUI arrests, a misdemeanor drug arrest and apprehended a wanted person.

The road safety checks involved nine Georgia State Patrol Nitehawk units, a state patrol cadet and a state patrol sergeant; a lieutenant, six sergeants, 26 officers from traffic, Central, Southside and Islands precinct patrol from SCMPD; two sheriff's office K-9 officers and their dogs; the Chatham-Savannah Counter Narcotics Team and a helicopter, a pilot and a tactical flight officer, according to an SCMPD news release.

As a result of the road safety checks, Central Precinct Commander Capt. DeVonn Adams plans on more operations to help control guns and drugs that lead to crimes, according to SCMPD.
