SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -
Hundreds of children packed the streets of downtown Savannah Friday morning for the annual Georgia day parade.
Marching to the beat of the drum, Georgia natives, colonists, pilgrims, Native Americans and countless historical characters paraded through Savannah's historic squares.
"We are here to celebrate," said student Sheron Robbins.
"Today, students are celebrating the birthday of the state of Georgia, as well as Juliet Gordon Lowes birthday," said Dr. Thomas Lockamy. "We are having a big celebration and a birthday party."
It's a parade rich in history that celebrates the day 279 years ago when General James Oglethorpe landed on the bluff, where Savannah City Hall now stands. History that is being passed on to area school children.
"So that they realize their heritage, many of them have ancestors that came over here with Oglethorpe, and so they know a lot of about the city. It is a great tourist city and for people like me, that grew up in Savannah, it's a great reminder," said Memorial Day School Teacher June Stewart.
Knowledge they proudly showed off during the parade with banners and costumes.
