Bus driver says she maced student to defend herself

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The bus driver fired for spraying a middle school student with mace says she stands by what she did because she was defending herself.

On the WTOC Facebook page, Tanika Harrison said: "I am not proud of what I did, however, I do feel justified in my actions. Don't judge a book by its cover. He may look like an innocent kid, but nothing could be further from the truth."

Harrison says the fourteen year old threatened to knock her out.

In the video taken with a cell phone camera, Harrison is seen spraying the mace in the student's face and repeatedly cursing at him.

First Student Bus Company fired her after the incident last Thursday.

A grand jury decided on Wednesday not to press charges against Harrison.

"If I had been so beligerant and crazed for no reason at all why am I not in jail? Because there is more to it. If I could change anything about that afternoon, it definitely wouldn't be my decision to spray him," Harrison said.

The Chatham County District Attorney says the grand jury was shown three different videos to help them make a decision.

If new evidence comes about, they can bring the charges back to the grand jury.

The fourteen year old's parents can press civil charges on the bus driver, but they say they want her to face criminal charges.
