Teachers react to No Child Left Behind waivers

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Some local teachers say they are glad No Child Left Behind is a thing of the past after President Obama gave waivers to Georgia and nine other states that they would no longer have to comply with the federal law.

Principal of Heard Elementary Academy in Savannah, Sylvia Wallis, says while her school was named a school of excellence in 2011, No Child Left Behind isn't fair because all students do not perform at the same academic level. Wallis also says with the law focusing on reading and math, students that are achieving in other subjects do not get the recognition they deserve.

"We want to be able to focus on the whole student not just reading and math. We also want to focus on science, physical education and other subjects," says Wallis.

No Child Left Behind was passed in 2002 by former President George W. Bush designed to raise student performance with a focus on math and reading. Under the law, schools with high performance would be rewarded and focus would be given to schools with low test scores.

28 other states plan to apply for the waiver including the District of Columbia.
