Stolen boat seized at Hale Marina; man charged

A man has been charged with possession a stolen boat from Louisiana.

Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Marine Patrol was investigating a possible abandoned boat that was in the parking lot of Intra Coastal Environmental in the 2600 block of Causton Bluff Street.

Maintenance records showed that the boat and motor were reported stolen in Morgan City, La., according to SCMPD, The boat was seized and secured at Hale Marina. 

On Jan. 25, James Miller, 40, was trying to retrieve the boat at Hale Marina, but left before officers arrived. A few days later, detectives contacted Miller. He told them he had bought the boat for $23,000 cash while he was working in Louisiana and showed a bill of sale, according to SCMPD.

Detectives worked to verify Miller's story, but found that the boat was stolen. Authorities in Louisiana were unable to verify the seller listed on Miller's bill of sale, according to police.

Miller was taken into custody without incident on Feb. 1. He was taken to the Chatham County Detention Center and charged with possession of stolen property from another State and failure to register vessel.
