SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -
Women plan to wear red on Friday as part of National Wear Red Day to raise awareness for heart disease.
An estimated 8 million women in the U.S. are living with heart disease, but only one in six American women believes that heart disease is her greatest health threat, according to the American Heart Association.
Women who Go Red: have lost weight; nearly half have increased their exercise; more than 40 percent have checked their cholesterol levels; and one-third have talked to their doctors about developing heart health plans; according to data from the AHA.
Ninety percent of women have one or more risk factors for developing heart disease.
To join the first Wear Red Day Challenge go to Facebook.com/GoRed to upload a video or photo photos of your Go Red efforts to the page. Encourage others to vote for you by liking your submissions. Winners for each of the award categories will be announced on Feb. 25.
