TYBEE ISLAND, GA (WTOC) -
It is starting to feel a little cooler outdoors and the holiday treats are surfacing, but if you are looking for a way to stay fit and eat healthy, no matter what the season, you don't have to travel too far.
Exercise is a way of life on Tybee, an island where biking is the preferred mode of transportation. You don't have to travel far on your feet or break the bank to get in some exercise and fun in the sun.
"On Tybee, you can do about anything without spending any money," said Owner of Ocean Front Cottages and the Tybee Island Wedding Chapel Stacye Jarell. "You can ride a bicycle, you can go for a walk on the beach, you can go kayaking. A lot of people like to jet ski and then walk on the beach. We have tons of people that do kite boarding and windsurfing, as well as stand up paddle boarding."
Tybee Island was recently designated America's Healthiest Beach by Health Magazine. Researchers looked at air and water quality, sand, range of fitness opportunities, healthy eats and proximity to a trauma center, to name a few.
"One of the reasons Tybee was chosen as one of the healthiest beaches in America is we have a long season for outdoor activity," said Jarell. "We are able to begin activities the first of March and do a lot of walking and running all the way until the first of January."
An island where year round the food is as fresh as the air you breathe and sun you soak in.
"Most of the restaurants realize that the majority of people that stay on Tybee and visit us really want some healthy options," said Jarell. "Yes, we do love fried shrimp, but we have grilled chicken, as well."
Even though we are heading into the winter months, healthy is in season on Tybee Island. So, go relax, breath in some fresh air, get moving, and grab a healthy snack. It's good for your body and soul.
Coming up in February, Tybee is hosting the Critz Tybee Run Fest. htttp://www.critztybeerun.com/
