Fit Club: Pace yourself

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The Rock 'n' Roll marathon is drawing near and WTOC wants to make sure everyone is prepared.

One of the biggest mistakes that marathoners make is starting out too fast and then hitting a wall later.

With the Rock 'n' Roll marathon just days away, some Crew runners are trying to pace themselves for the big day ahead.

"Slowing it down for the last week," said Richard Simmons.

"Trying to get eight hours of sleep a night and eating pretty well ," said Victoria Tenbrock

Support plays a key role in being successful.

"We have all stuck together for the past six months," said Tenbrock. "It has been a phenomenal program. Fleet Feet has been amazing. Everyone has really rose to the challenges and we have dug within ourselves to push through the challenges and achieve our goals."

To help the runners achieve their marathon goals, Fleet Feet is offering pace teams.

"If you are tasking yourself with trying to stick to a certain pace, it is going to help you stay that course," said Chris Ramsey, Fleet Feet manager. "A lot of times, you can get discouraged or worn out, having people keep you accountable is really going to help you along the way."

The pace leaders, which are coming from all over the United States, will run a steady pace, so that the group can achieve their goal of finishing the marathon at a particular time.

"A lot of these people are going to be running their first marathon or half marathon, to have someone take you through it is always a good thing," said Robert Espinoza, Fleet Feet owner.

You will want to keep your eyes peeled for the leaders of the pack, many of which have traveled many miles to hit the ground running in Savannah.

"We have 5 people from Gamboa and 12 people from Canada," said Espinoza. "They are coming from everywhere, which is neat. We need to open our arms as a community, as they are running through the streets of Savannah.

Supporting the runners as they achieve their goals and draw near the finish line.

You can sign up for pacing during the Health and Fitness Expo this Thursday and Friday at the International Trade and Convention Center on Hutchinson Island. WTOC will also have a booth, so stop by and join us Thursday from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
