Joy Nelson: Assistant News Director

The world of journalism has always interested me, even as a small child when I'd sit on my father's lap and watch the evening news with him. My love for the news grew as I did, and at age 16, I started working on a program at the NBC affiliate in Washington D.C. called Teen TV. Teenagers from around Washington D.C. would report on teen topics. From my very first story on Teen Fashion, I was hooked and knew I'd be in the business for as long as it would have me.

From there I moved to Columbia, S.C., where I attended the University of South Carolina. In 1997, I started volunteering my time at the ABC affiliate, WOLO in Columbia. I learned everything from running prompter, editing tape to writing stories for the news. After college I got my first paying Broadcast Journalism job at the CBS affiliate, WLTX in Columbia. I started off as a part time editor and quickly moved up to Assignment Editor to Weekend Reporter and fill in producer. I spent 3 years at WLTX gaining unbelievable knowledge about the business. I felt so lucky to be exposed to so much.

From there my husband, Derek, was transferred to Charleston, S.C. so I decided I'd go with him. This is where my career really took off at the CBS affiliate, WCSC. I was hired in 2002 as a producer/reporter. In the eight years I spent in Charleston I had my two beautiful little girls and was promoted to my first Managing Position in TV as the Managing Editor --  the toughest job in the newsroom. The advantage, however, you learn quickly the ins and outs of the business and whether or not you want to stay in the business. I chose to stay and here I'm today.

I love Savannah, even though I'm still living in South Carolina. My husband and I decided to move to Bluffton, S.C., where we reside with our two daughters, dog and two cats.
