The Savannah-Area World War II Monument Committee received another significant contribution. Campaigning to raise construction funding, the German Heritage Society has donated over $19,000 to further the monument goal. Echoing the feelings of so many throughout the coastal area, the Heritage Society felt that our World War II veterans have gone far too long without being properly honored with a tribute-monument of their own.
Work continues on the site that will soon welcome two half-globes, each weighing 12,000 pounds, and representing the two distinct spheres of combat, illustrating and reinforcing, clearly, that it truly was, in every sense, a world-wide war. The plan is to have construction completed and the dedication held in time for Veteran's Day this November.
Our sincere thanks to the German Heritage Society for their commitment to help make the World War II monument a reality. The Committee is still accepting donations, so please do so if you are able. As with our brave men and women who serve the cost of freedom for us today, we can never repay the debt for the courage and sacrifice America's World War II veterans contributed over 60-years ago to the lasting freedom and opportunities made available to us within this truly great nation.
