Two treasured American institutions celebrate historic anniversaries. First, the Boy Scouts of America, now observing 100-years of helping to build character, and mold young lives into productive future leaders for our nation. As many already know, the historic Scout Law contains twelve, key character-values, at least six of which apply directly to the urgent task of restoring our nation and our sacred traditions: trustworthy, loyal, obedient, thrifty, brave and reverent, especially the latter, foolishly shunned by far too many. Congratulations to the Boy Scouts of America, and to their devoted pack, troop and district leaders, who know well what guides them. Your values-driven outcomes are a vital part of what makes America great.
And speaking of vital, this week marks the 220th anniversary of the United States Coast Guard. Begun in 1790 as the Revenue Marine, within the Treasury Department, joining with the U.S. Lifesaving Service in 1915, to form what has become our modern Coast Guard. As Commandant Admiral Robert Papp describes the Coast Guard's multi-mission task: "We readily go wherever there are important, difficult, and dangerous maritime duties to be performed." Savannah is honored to have five Coast Guard units serving in our midst. On this 220th anniversary, we thank these dedicated and courageous men and women for their life-and-property-saving efforts, and for their vigilant coastal service, in defense of our nation's security.
