Editorial Salute - 06/10/10

Two, terrific, Savannah-based military leaders move on.  After a 3-year tour here, Coast Guard Air Station-Savannah Executive Officer Nick Bartolotta is leaving to take command of the Coast Guard's Air Station in Atlantic City.  Prior to departing, a ceremony was held during which Commander Bartolotta was promoted to the rank of Captain which, in the sea services, equates to a land and air full colonel.  Captain Bartolotta, wife Mary and children, will be sorely missed by area Coast Guardsmen, both active duty and auxiliary, as well as by the Greater Savannah community as a whole.

Retiring, but thankfully not leaving us, is Chief Master Sergeant Betty Morgan.  Chief Morgan has served for 32-years in the Georgia Air National Guard, virtually all of it with our 165th Airlift Wing.  During that time, by virtue of her exemplary service, Chief Morgan rose through the ranks to become the Georgia Air Guard's Command Chief, it's top enlisted officer, and a member of the Air Guard's senior staff, representing the issues and needs pertinent to the state's 2,500 enlisted force.  In addition to her lengthy state and national service as a traditional guardsmen, she's been an outstanding teacher in the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System, currently instructing at Hubert Middle School.  Twice named "Teacher of the Year," she was also honored as a "Top Teacher" by WTOC.  While, thankfully, she'll continue here in the classroom, she now takes her leave from her second family, the Georgia Air Guard. Our thanks and very best wishes to Betty Morgan, a fantastic role-model for young and old alike, for her over three decades of achievement and dedicated service to our military.
