Since most national media don't like stories about American patriots, you may not have heard about the gentleman in Virginia, who went against his neighborhood covenants, by proudly flying his American flag atop a 21-foot flag pole in his front yard. The association threatened court action. That is until the nation's regular and web-based media of right got involved, and pressured the homeowner's group to allow a covenant exception.
And here's why that happened. You see, this now 90-year-old gentleman was no ordinary World War II soldier, fighting against tyranny in Europe. On May 23, 1944, in Italy, his platoon under fire from entrenched Germans, Technical-Sergeant Van T. Barfoot, crawled forward alone, taking-out two enemy machine guns, and its crews, leading a third enemy crew to actually surrender to him in the midst of the fight, soon followed by others, a total of 17 in all. Later that day, his unit, occupying the ground he had single-handedly gained, the Germans counter-attacked with three Mark-Six tanks. Sergeant Barfoot grabbed a bazooka, stood exposed in front of them, and from 75-yards, disabled the lead-tank, dispatching its crew as they dismounted, causing the remaining tanks to change course. He then destroyed a newly-abandoned German artillery-piece, before assisting badly wounded soldiers to the rear. For his "conspicuous gallantry at the risk of his life," Sergeant Barfoot was awarded the Medal of Honor, and later promoted to Second Lieutenant. He retired as a Colonel, after also serving in Korea and Vietnam. More than enough reason for his neighbors, rather than contesting the flag, to salute both it, and this incredible American hero, as he continues, proudly, to honor, daily, the nation he loves.
